[Oct 09 2017] Dwarven Fortress: "Ambersyrup" [15th Granite, 250] New world, new challenges. I decided to go big and pretty much bump up all the settings on world gen to "high". More creatures, more beasts, more civilizations, and lots of ore 'cuz fuck it. Hopefully this will add a little danger to an otherwise long, tedious affair. I'm sticking with a Third Strike team which will slowly branch out into a general Street Fighter fortress. If it goes on as crazy-long as the last run, I can progressively branch out to other similar Capcom properties. In a way, I kinda hope I don't get so lucky! We have Necro the miner, Elena the woodworker, Sean the all-purpose crafter, Oro the farmer, Effie the all-purpose hunter, Q the doctor, and Makoto the hard-ass. There's a pair of hills to the north and south of the map, while from the east flows in a ... thin, absurdly straight river. It zigzags completely stiffly across the valley before sort of... exploding at the west end of the map, puttering out in several long streaks. It's otherwise a mostly flat area with a LOT of trees and some harmless looking wildlife. [19th Granite, 250] My wagon landed in the south of the river while my fort would be best suited for the north. One of my first jobs was to build a wooden bridge over the river because the dwarves are walking aaall the way around it to get back and forth from the wagon to the base. [22nd Granite, 250] I assign Effie a couple of hunting dogs and leave her to her devices as I prep things. She immediately gets the three of them in a fight with a snapping turtle and bruises her torso, and breaks one of her toes. They fucked that turtle up proper, but one of the hunting dogs is pretty beaten up. [23rd Granite, 250] That snapping turtle attacked Oro as he was trying to build the bridge, and Oro kicked it around a bunch. Quite the reversal. I order Makoto to go break the thing in half because, despite having only one part of its body that isn't injured, it is STILL going. [24th Granite, 250] She *strangled it* to death. [1st Slate, 250] River otters were giving my dwarves some trouble too, so I sent Makoto to deal with one. She ripped off its paw, bit its leg, then grabbed that leg and swung it around like a ragdoll repeatedly until it died. She's a little hurt but nothing severe. It's evident I need to get some walls built around this damn shelter and fast. [2nd Slate, 250] I can't believe I spent the opening of a game watching Makoto wrestle sea creatures to death. [19th Felsite, 250] Things calmed down. I think Makoto scared off the wildlife. No one's bothered us since, so the dwarves have just been haulin' and minin'. Need a lot of rock before I can build a castle surrounding my fort, which is entirely what I plan to do. Plus or minus the moat, I'll at least need a floor surrounding the wall so beasts can't hide in the damn water from me again. ...whoa I ran out of food and drink *fast*. Using extra big workshop space meant spending more time setting up, which means I won't have food for a while! Uh oh! [18th Hematite, 250] Slaughtered our horse and camel before they starved to death. Got a lot of meat outta the deal! With fresh water, we'll survive just fine until the crops provide harvest. [2nd Malachite, 250] Poison and Hugo with their daughter Ibuki make it to the settlement. An early set of hands to help speed up this process. Hugo is a fisher, too, which helps with my whole 'WHERE FOOD' situation. [5th Sandstone, 250] Hey, visitors! Haven't seen those in a while. [28th Timber, 250] I got bored and told Makoto to go kill a giant squirrel that was running around. She bit and punched the thing, knocked it out, and then - I'm not exaggerating here - punched it in the head about 40 times. [3rd Moonstone, 250] Spoke too soon. I think there's a bug. There's about 2 pages worth of initial fighting in the report, and then 45 pages worth of "she punches it in the head" with the occasional "she passed out from exhaustion". Given that its roughly 25 punches per page, she apparently punched the thing ~1080 times. I told her to stop before she died of over-exertion, because I'm willing to bet she'd keep doing that until she died in some fashion. The thing isn't dead, either, it just continuously got punched, woke up, and fell unconcious over and over again. [4th Granite, 251] Oh lawdy its a thief! I haven't finished my barracks yet!! [5th Granite, 251] Makoto threw the thing to the ground and beat the shit out of it, then immediately turned around to go eat. I got a large copper dagger outta the deal! [15th Granite, 251] ...I apparently don't know what I'm looking at. I got a prompt for a 'petition', and I thought it was that some visitor wanted to live in my fort. I accepted it and... I now have a new unit who is apparently a "slave". Uuuuuuuhm. [22nd Granite, 251] TH THAT WAS LIKE 30 MIGRANTS I still only have a dormatory with 25 beds too. I'm not even done moving items around and I need to start carving out 45 bedrooms!! [21st Felsite, 251] Newcomer Vega almost immediately went insane from stress. His thoughts page have nothing but positive things in it. [5th Hematite, 251] Everything is going so slowly because 75% of the fortress is in the tavern at any given time. I'm about to tear the damn thing down until we actually get, like, a fucking fortress built. [13th Hematite, 251] Vega died of dehydration right outside the tavern. I dunno what the fuck that was about. I'd dig out a place to bury him if the dwarves weren't too busy partying to do shit. [26th Hematite, 251] I look away for a second and they elect FANG as mayor. Idiots. [8th Galena, 251] FANG bans the export of short swords. We don't *have* short swords. [15th Galena, 251] Uhm. There'a a big-ass weretortoise outside my shelter. I just started building walls, and there are no doors to keep him out. Ruh-roh. As it catches Farmer Natsu running down the stairs, it throws her downward, then sort of... beats the crap outta here from the staircase above, somehow. Farmer B.B.Hood leaps up to its level and starts wailing on it. My military is running down the hallway towards it but it's looking a bit too late for Natsu. Weaver Adon catches his attention next. He quickly loses the use of his spleen. The military arrives. Adon basically has no bones in either of his legs, and has lost his liver in addition to his spleen. There are about 8 dwarves wailing on this thing. Adon is still getting the brunt of his attacks. How either him or Natsu could survive this is beyond me. The weretortoise grabs hold of Hammerer Birdie! The tortoise is bruised in EVERY area, but he's still fighting. ...it's a mess, I can't even keep track. Natsu got up and is still fighting the damn thing. It's lost its left eye completely. [16th Galena, 251] It's dead. Sakura and Juli got banged up pretty damn bad. Juni is hurt but alright. Birdie escaped with a few bruises. One of Makoto's wardogs is dead. My hospital only had two beds put into it, and right now it needs at least 8... come to think of it, I hadn't put half the stuff I had prepared for my hospital up yet. Considering the last werecreature that attacked me completely ended my fort, I could be preparing for a nightmare of an ending. [17th Galena, 251] Sakura's dead. Q's hard at work diagnosing and suturing patients. ...they just threw like 5 of the patients into a corner of the hospital room. Only Birdie was given a bed, and there's still one bed that's open. [8th Limestone, 251] I just realized, Metalcrafter Juni is the one responsible for the killing blow. Again, it's amazing how my non-military dwarves manage to be more helpful than the trained fighters. ...I can assign designations with my mouse??? That's the first thing I've noticed is affected by mouse usage! [11th Limestone, 251] Adon wandered out of the hospital and he's on hauling duty, to my shock. Q is working desperately hard to keep Natsu stable. [13th Limestone, 251] ...christ, there it is. 5 of the people involved with the weretortoise fight, pretty much anyone I made note of, has turned. B.B.Hood is immediately killed, a fight breaks out in the tavern. Several of the weretortoises bleed out but a few are still fighting, and deaths start racking up. 7 are killed before the day ends. [14th Limestone, 251] Makoto is dead. Several others, too, but I'm gonna miss her most of all. She put up quite a fight with Natsu before being taken down. [16th Limestone, 251] ...for reasons I'm not sure of, about 6 people jumped on Tavern Keeper Bison and beat the shit out of him 'til he died. He had the largest list of injuries I have ever seen, including having a non-functional heart. ...Ryu was responsible for killing Bison... [18th Limestone, 251] Some idiot shows up and tries to make trade negotiations. I'm just waiting for the rest of my fortress to tear itself apart. [10th Sandstone, 251] Everytime I'm about to say something to the contrary, a slew of people turn into weretortoises. 7 people drop dead, and then some migrants arrive. I'm abandoning. Let this serve as a lesson: don't build a tavern until you're done with all the long-term labor. Dwarves will not fucking work.
